We are the lucky country so our spring isn’t only about flowers. Here are some of my favorite Aussies for foliage and form. I prune most of these to keep the foliage fresh and quite small. Currently experimenting with Aussie natives that can make dense topiary and low hedging.
Banksia repens, the Creeping Banksia
Acacia aphylla Mimosaceae
Acacia aphylla Mimosaceae can grow into a round bush up to 1- 2m but after flowering it responds well to pruning.
Conospermum triplinervium Tree Smokebush
Very hardy and suits many soils, Tree Smokebush makes a statement grown en-mass or by its self, keeping it’s shape well and responding to some pruning.
Eucalyptus pulverulenta — Silver-leaved Mountain Gum
There are many Australian native plants that can be pruned, coppiced and trained to make the most of their fabulous foliage. I hope you have fun exploring them – let me know what Australian natives are your favorites?
